^ now there's 5 measures/bar!!-
Did musicman answer your question ? I only ask because I'm not sure that I fully understand the question...
It sounds like initially you want to add bars to the composition, but then it sounds like you want to add beats to the measure, and keep it on the same line...
Keeping things on the same line, to me, means that your number of measures expanded beyond the default number of measures per line and you want them all to stay on one line. You can change this using "Edit Mode" [click the small blue triangle to the left of the "play" button]. Then you will see a blue "+" "-" "o" stacked at the end of each line of music. "+" adds measures to the line, "-" subtracts [moves 1 measure to the next line] and "O" balances the number of measures on the line based on the required note spacing [it tries to keep the score from looking squished!]
If you were just wanting to add beats to the measure, just right arrow past the last note and GP will insert a space for you to enter the note in. Unfortunately, it only allows you to insert one note at a time [unless you copy and paste something into that space...], but it works fine for single notes. Also, if you want to enter a note in the middle of a bar or phrase, you can just press and it will insert a rest equal to the note you pressed on. Then you just need to replace the rest with whatever note you were going to insert.
Hope this adds to what musicman had for you...

In the example above, I would change the signature to 5/4 and add a whole rest for the sections that have four measures. Hope this helps.
